Subsurface scattering

Nov 7, 2002 · The face was modeled by Steven Stahlberg. This bust of Diana the Huntress is made of translucent marble. It has been rendered using subsurface scattering to capture the translucency including multiple scattering in the marble. Just 200,000 photons were used to simulate multiple scattering in the marble. This is the same marble bust as shown above.

Subsurface scattering. Subsurface Scattering . The Subsurface Scattering node is used to add simple subsurface multiple scattering, for materials such as skin, wax, marble, milk and others. For these materials, rather than light being reflect directly off the surface, it will penetrate the surface and bounce around internally before getting absorbed or leaving the surface at a nearby point.

Subsurface scattering is an important effect for realistic rendering of translucent materials such as skin, flesh, fat, fruits, fungi, milk, marble, and many others. Subsurface scattering is responsible for effects like color bleeding inside materials, or the diffusion of light across shadow boundaries. In this paper, we propose two real-time models for simulating subsurface scattering for a large variety of translucent materials, which need under 0.5 ms per frame to execute. This makes them a practical option for real-time production scenarios. Current state-of-the-art, real-time approaches simulate subsurface light transport by approximating ... Subsurface Scattering Variables •Albedo: first approximation of BRDF, % of light reflected off the surface –When the albedo = 1, no absorption occurs and light is only transmitted or scattered. This is an ok approximation for … While subsurface scattering effects are crucial for producing realistic images, the computation of light transport using standard path tracing methods for each grain can be prohibitively expensive. Although there have been several methods developed to address this issue, they all assume that bounding spheres of individual grains do not intersect.
