The Infinite and the Divine is one of the best books I have read. Necrons. The Cain series is a good start into the Guard and 40k in general. They are written as an in universe autobiography, edited and commented on by an inquisitor for internal use only. It's definitely less serious and more funny then average.Also the Caiphas Cain novel (my favourite 40k series) Caves of Ice is about a huge battle against Orks over a Prometheum refininery. Armageddon by Aaron Dembski-Bowden is a great look at Orks as the opposing force. They're gross and deadly and ramshackle, so, in other words, full of good Orkyness.
